In 1845 General Zachary Taylor set up a permanent camp to prepare for the war with Mexico, and they remained there until March of 1846. The settlement was officially named Corpus Christi in 1852 when it was incorporated. During the American Civil War, Corpus Christi became a battlefield as The United States Navy fought confederate forces and eventually beat them. In 1926 the Port of Corpus Christi was opened, and the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station was built in 1941.
